The unpredictable nature and untamed beauty of the Scottish coastline are a constant source of inspiration for Caroline. Her designs are informed by the textures, colours, shapes and light found there and the emotions they evoke. Flotsam and jetsam, patterns and marks made by the tide and the weathered surfaces are echoed in her colour palette and the way she uses vitreous enamel.
Happy to let a piece develop in the making process; allowing the natural characteristics of different techniques to interact, she explores jewellery making and enamelling techniques to achieve her wonderful textured surfaces and beautiful hues. Each stage is made by hand; preferring the fluidity this gives her work; nothing is identical, no pattern is exactly the same. She enjoys the connection this gives her with each piece and the spontaneity that comes from experimenting with enamel.
